Types of Alarm Systems for Your Home or Business

As the concern for safety rises, alarm systems are becoming more common in both homes and businesses. With a higher focus on safety for your property, it is important to understand what alarm systems are available to you. Here is a quick look at what types of alarm systems are on the market today.

Burglary Monitoring

Burglary monitoring systems will be what most people think of when it comes to security systems. Home security systems aimed at burglary monitoring will usually just consist of alarms on the doors of the home, though break alarms on windows are also possible. Business or other commercial security systems use tougher systems which include alarms but can also include camera monitoring as well. These alarm systems are usually programmed to contact the police if they are tripped, though some modern systems also contact the owner of the property.

Fire Alarms

Fire alarms are simple and self-contained, meaning that they do not automatically contact authorities. However, schools or businesses may have a fire alarm that is set up to call the fire department in case of a direct pulling of the alarm. Fire alarm systems in homes usually do little more than warn the residents of danger. In businesses, the fire alarm may be linked to a system of sprinklers that provide preliminary protection against the hazard.

Carbon Monoxide Monitoring

Functioning much like a fire alarm, carbon monoxide monitors are becoming more common. Especially in older homes or businesses, carbon monoxide can build up in basements or other enclosed spaces. Since the gas is nearly impossible for humans to detect, the carbon monoxide monitor alerts property owners when gas levels are too high to be safe.

Medical Alerts

Some home alarm systems include a medical alert function. This creates a system that, in the case of medical emergencies, place the affected individual in contact with people who can help. These alarm systems usually come in the form of a small button that can be carried around with the property owner. When pressed, the device will put the owner in touch with workers at the call center of the security company. If needed, these workers then contact medical help and send it towards the owner.

Water Alarms

In areas of high flooding, water alarms are a common installation. Water alarms are simple sensors that detect leaks or rising water levels. When these hazards are detected, the alarm system contacts the owner of the property with the information. These alarms are often used in, and prove most effective for, homes or business that contain a lot of electronics that are in danger of water damage.
